Where are the True Friends?

Written April 26, 1998

Where are the true friends?
The ones who won't betray your trust?
The ones who'll be there for you
Until you return to the dust?

Where are the true friends?
Why can't I seem to find
A friend with whom I can share
Any thought that enters my mind?

Every time I've thought I've found someone
I realize how shallow they are
And once again begin my search
For signs of life on a distant star.

Why can't I end this futile search?
All I want is a true friend.
Perhaps I do not need this after all
But my heart pushes me not to bend.

I want to share my heart's joys with someone
And laugh the night away;
Experience life's thrills and chills
With someone who will stay.

Shallowness runs rampant among the world
And true depth is hard to find.
Loyalty and Trust are becoming to me
Only imagination's figments of the mind.

Who will share my life with me,
Learn to love and to adjust
To all of the conflicts of life?
Alone my heart will rust.

Where are all the true friends?
