Dewdrops

Written June 20, 1998

Sunshine reflects off a glistening dewdrop
hanging from a flower's leaf near a pond.
Underneath a tree, relaxing in the shade
reclines a lovely young lady.
She tentatively plucks a violet lilac
and shyly hands it to her companion.

The blossom is received graciously by the companion
who lovingly brushes from its petals a dewdrop.
He then raises to his lips the lilac
then spontaneously flings it into the crystal pond,
drawing a hurt and confused reaction from the lady
who then withdraws from the darkened shade.

He also retreats from the shade
and follows after his adoring companion
who is speedily running away; the lady
has a tear on her face like the dewdrop
and it falls unheeded into the pond
causing ripples that reach to the floating lilac.

She glances up and, upon spying the drowning lilac,
frowns, bringing to her face a pinkish shade.
Then, stepping determinedly down towards the pond
and much to the astonishment of her companion
marches out into the depths, splashing dewdrops,
all the while knowing such action is unbecoming to a lady.

Shivering with cold dampness, the lady
reaches down and retrieves the bedraggled lilac
and with a tear forming in her eye like a dewdrop
returns from the waters to the shade
where she is immediatly joined by her companion;
they sit together and gaze upon the pond.

The man stands up suddenly and pulls her towards the pond
and momentarily forgetting she is a lady,
he amorously takes the hand oh his companion
and, kissing the flower, tenderly places in her hand the lilac.
The light in her eyes renounces the gloomy shade.
No longer on her cheek glistens the dewdrop.
